The Nevada State Legislature carved Elko County out of the north-eastern part of Lander County on March 5, 1869. Elko County has a population of approximately 67,000. Elko County covers 17,000 sq, miles and is the 4th largest county in the U.S.
Elko County is the 4th largest gold producing area in the world. Newmont Mining Company opened in 1965 and still operates today along with Barrick Goldstrike and several other mining companies.
Elko is well known for the national Basque Festival that started in 1963 and still continues to this day. In 1985 the world famous Cowboy Poetry Gathering started and continues to draw cowboys and spectators from all over the world.
